NMS Review for USMLE Step 1

Because medical education and testing paradigms continue to evolve in the United States, we are
especially pleased to present the seventh edition of the Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Review for USMLE
Step 1. This edition incorporates a deep appreciation for the rapid advances in our understanding of the
molecular basis of disease, stimulated in part by the completion of the Human Genome Project, the
enormous increase in the data that can be presented to medical students, and a consensus that an
integrated presentation of information during the first 2 years of medical school is desirable.
With the advent of the USMLE Step 1 that initially de-emphasized the traditional basic science
disciplines and stressed the integrated approach, we believe it is especially important to provide students
with a series of questions that accurately reflects this new format and prepares students for the test.
Since the first edition, the Review for USMLE Step 1 has undergone several iterations, reflecting the
thoughtful comments of both students and faculty. In this new edition, we have expunged questions
using the matching format and the “except” format, and we have continued to increase the patientbased
questions that we hope will test your ability to integrate key basic science concepts with relevant
clinical problems.
This book provides question types that are now used on the USMLE and will continue to be used
for the new computer-based format. We appreciate all of the complimentary and thoughtful comments
that readers have provided to help improve the book. We hope you will also find this book useful, and
we and the publisher welcome any comments you may have.
